Guidance For Boxer Dog Training
August 27, 2008
A boxer dog is a very beautiful, intelligent and loyal pet. Many people are attracted towards boxer dogs due to their beauty, they like them due to their intelligence and prefer to have boxer dogs as a pet at home due to their loyal nature. Boxer dog training needs a lot of effort and attention as in comparison to other dogs. You may start a boxer dog training when it becomes 13 weeks old. It learns quickly in comparison to other dogs.
A boxer dog gets bored very soon. Therefore, do some arrangement where your boxer dog stays which may keep in engaged whole day. The best solution for this problem is that you should give toys to your boxer dog during boxer dog training. Your boxer dog will keep on playing the whole day with the toys. Give it toys of different types and colour so that if it does not want to play with a toy, it may start playing with another toy.
You must spend yourself some time with boxed dog daily. Do not waste the unique abilities of your box dog but encourage your boxer dog and help it how to improve its extra abilities during boxer dog training. If you spend some time with your boxer dog, your boxer dog will not feel alone itself and will not feel bore when you will teach it different things during boxer dog training. When you sit with your boxer dog, it comes to know that someone loves it and takes care of it and likes to spend his time with it. It will make it happy, and it will learn quickly all things which you will teach it during boxer dog training. You should give it special training about how to come to know about the hidden things.
You should always take care of food of the boxer dog during training. Your box dog should not eat any such food which may affect its health or may make it sick temporary. Try to give special foods of boxer dogs to them which are sold in the markets. You should give special food to your boxer dog for increasing its intelligence. Always prefer to give fresh food to a boxer dog. Wash the utensils of your boxer dog every time when you give it food and do not give stale food to your boxer dog.
Take your boxer dog for walk at least three times every day as when your boxer dog goes out of the house with you, it watches surroundings and can watch people in its surroundings. As a boxer dog is intelligent, therefore, can come to know about the wrong matter of its surroundings soon, and it results in successful boxer dog training. Your boxer dog has been learned what you wanted to teach it during boxer dog training when it comes to know about the wrong matter of its surrounding. Now, your boxer dog becomes completely ready for use. It can judge about the thieves due to its intelligence.

Cat Health Threats
August 27, 2008
Cat Health threats fall into two major categories. Bodily harm from fighting, accidents, or cruel humans is one category. Common illnesses, parasites, and known system weaknesses is the other.
An indoor cat has a huge advantage against the bodily harm threats. A cat that lives outdoors (or ventures out often) is subject to many physical threats. It does depend on the environment, busy suburban areas and rural areas are probably the worst. Quiet neighborhoods, with little traffic and few predators have much less risk.
The same factors have a bearing on the second category too. If a cat is not exposed to other animals or parasites, and receives proper feeding and care the risk for illness and disease is greatly reduced. There still are some natural causes, like kidney problems, that are unavoidable.
Cats are tough little critters. The common tale of a cat having 9 lives is a result of the ability of a cat to survive under the most adverse conditions. A cat’s natural agility, suspicion of everything, and quick reflexes offer a huge advantage against many physical threats. Cats seem to possess a high survival instinct that serves them well too.
Almost any cat owner can tell a story or two of a harrowing escape by their pet from almost certain disaster. And if you’ve ever tried to rescue a feral Tom Cat that didn’t want to be rescued, you are certainly aware of their ability to defend against or escape capture.
I know from experience that some cats (especially rescued cats) want to go outside. And they will make your life miserable if you don’t concede. One solution I’ve found is to make an outdoor shelter of some kind (like a portable dog kennel – but make sure it has a top of some type) or enclosed area. That way the cat gets to go outside but you’ve protected them from most threats. I’ve even seen people put a cat on a leash but none of my cats would ever allow that to happen.
The number one cat health threat to an indoor cat is getting over weight. The more excess weight, the greater the risk for all types of health issues (just like in people). Controlling the amount and type of food is important to your cat’s health. Some dry food (helps keep their teeth clean too), some high protein soft food, and a few table scraps are all OK. It’s when you give them unlimited amounts of all three that the problems start.
Playing with your cat can be important when it comes to weight issues. Don’t let your cat become a couch potato, try to keep them active. A great simple toy such as a stick with a feature tied to a string at the end can provide lots of exercise. Anything that rolls around is a good toy too since most cats will chase it around.
Vaccinations are important and yearly checkups at the Vet can alert you to problems before they become life threatening. Watching your cat for unusual behavior (like not eating or drinking as normal) is important too. Catching any health problems before they become critical can save you lots of frustration and money at the Vet.
Urinary and Kidney infections are common in cats. The most common cause appears to be absorbing too much ash elements from prepared cat food, especially the wet variety. Always check the label on any cat food to check for ash content. I don’t know what levels are acceptable, so I avoid any brands with ash.
Another common cause of urinary and kidney problems are minerals that build up and block the urethra tube. I had a cat that constantly had blockage problems until we changed his food and went to filtered water. A simple filter on your faucet can help both you and you’re cats from too many minerals in your water. Speaking of water, you should always allow access to clean water, hydration is important to keeping your cat healthy.
It’s also recommended that you feed multiple small meals or free feed (cat has 24 hour access to food) than feed one big meal a day. This is true of most animals and people. Small meals are easier to digest and also increase the body’s caloric burn rate, which can help with the weight problems too.
Hookworms, roundworms, and tapeworms are common parasites that present severe health threats to cats. Hookworms are the worst since they live in the intestines and suck blood from the host. Hookworms can cause death from creating severe anemia in very short periods of time. Roundworms will steal nutrients and make the host more susceptible to many illnesses. Tapeworms will consume nutrients and cause rapid weight loss.
Parasites can be visible in fecal matter or be found with blood tests by your Vet. That’s why it’s good to try and makes sure your cat gets an annual checkup. Or if you notice your cat eating more but not gaining any weight, or becoming listless, you should immediately have your Vet do some fecal and blood tests.

Getting the Right Cat Flap
August 26, 2008
If you own a cat then you may have noticed that letting them in and out all of the time can be a nightmare. It is not always as simple as letting your cat out during the day and keeping them in at night. Your cat will meow when they want to go in and out and this can occur throughout the day and night.
It really can drive you insane having to constantly get up and open the door. However, there is an easier way and that is to install a cat flap.
What is a Cat Flap?
A cat flap is installed at the bottom of your outside door and it allows your cat to come in and out whenever it feels like it. There are a number of different designs available so you should easily be able to find one to suit your needs.
However, there are some concerns regarding cat flaps and one of them is that many allow not only your cat to enter your home, but other cats too!
Luckily, there are alternatives available to stop stray cats from wandering into your house.
So just what options are available to you and how do you choose the best one to suit you?
How to Choose a Cat Flap
The main points to keep in mind when shopping for a cat flap include:
o Are there many other cats in your area?
o Do you want a basic flap or would you like added features?
o Do you want to be able to control the flap yourself?
o Do you want a particular style?
o What is your budget?
The above are just a few things that you should think about before purchasing a cat flap. Your budget will play a big part in the one you end up with. So before you do start looking, decide how much you can realistically afford to spend and then stick to it. Obviously if you want a flap which has many different features, you will have to expect to pay a little more than you would if you just bought a basic flap.
The features that you can choose from include a locking fixture, cat flaps which only allow your pet to activate the flap. Locking cat flaps allow you to close the flap whenever you need to. You can choose from 2 way or 4 way locking method. 2 way flaps allow you to simply lock from both ways; ensuring that your cat stays either in or out of the home when it is locked. 4 way locking cat flaps allow you to manually select whether you want it to stay locked from the inside, the outside or both. If you lock the flap from the inside then your cat will not be able to go back outside. However if you own more than two cats then your other cat will still be able to get in from the outside.
Overall, there are many options that you can choose from. Basic ones do work well, but obviously the more advanced options will allow you to control your cat’s movements more.

Why It’s Important to Choose the Right Dog Lead
August 26, 2008
Owning a dog is a big responsibility and there are a number of things that you need to purchase to take care of them properly. One thing which is extremely important is a dog lead.
These come in a variety of different sizes and there are a few different types to choose from. Selecting the right type of lead to suit your dog is essential and many people do not realise the importance of selecting the right one.
So just why is the type of lead that you choose important and how could it make a difference to your walks?
Why Dog Leads Are Important
Dog leads are used whenever you want to take your dog out of the home. All dogs need some form of exercise and this usually means taking them out for daily walks. It is not realistic to simply take your dog out without a lead as they could easily run into the road, run up to strangers and other dogs and generally just get out of control as they become excited. So a dog lead is needed to keep control of your dog and to keep them with you.
If you do not choose the right type of lead then a number of problems can arise.
First, not all leads will be the same strength. Some are made from fabric and they are not designed to be used with larger breeds of dogs. If you were to use a flimsy fabric lead on a Rottweiler, for example, there is a big chance that the dog could simply snap the lead in two if they pull too much. So you need to take the size of your dog into account when choosing.
The Different Types of Leads Available
There are a couple of different types of leads available and which include:
• Retractable leads
• Standard Leads
Retractable leads can be extended at just the push of a button. Many owners prefer to have this type if they do not want to let their dog run free in their local park. Instead they have the power to let the dog roam a certain length in front of them and if needed the lead can be shortened again. This can give you more control over the dog and can be extremely handy. However, they are not always overly strong so again, they may be better for smaller breeds of dog.
Standard leads are simply leads that you hold at one end and attach to your dogs collar at the other. They do not change in size, although they do come in a variety of styles and materials. Usually, they are created using either leather or nylon but they also come in the form of a chain for extra strength. If you do own a larger dog then a chain style lead would be ideal. The handle is usually made from leather and the chain is made from metal with a metal clip that attaches to the dogs collar.
Overall, there are many different types of leads available to suit your dog. The main thing to look at is the length. Smaller dogs will need a smaller lead than bigger dogs. Choosing the right one is essential and you should spend as much time as possible selecting the right one for your dog.

5 Easy Tips For Identifying Dog Skin Problems
August 26, 2008
Itchy skin, hair loss, constant scratching, ear and anal gland problems are the most common indicators of a dog skin problem.
Although there are many canine skin disorders, the 5 following tips will help to identify some of the more common dog skin problems.
1. Fleas: The best way to identify a flea problem is to check your pets belly area and along the inside of the back legs. The hair is thinner in this area and easier to spot both fleas and flea dirt. The flea itself is brown or copper colored and roughly the size of a pin-head. Flea dirt looks like sprinkled pepper. Ruffling the fur on your dog’s back and along the base of the tail is also an easy way to find fleas and flea droppings. Often times dogs that develop Flea Allergy Dermatitis will show hair loss around the base (top) of the tail. There are many options available for flea and tick control.
2. Food Allergy Dermatitis: Although food allergies can appear in pups as early on as 5 or 6 months, they can also develop in adult dogs as late as 11 or 12 years old. Common symptoms of food allergy dermatitis are itching of the skin, excessive scratching, hot spots and even skin infections. Dog owners should realize that there is a distinct difference between Food Allergies and Food Intolerance. Like people, classic symptoms of a food intolerance would be an upset stomach and diarrhea. All foods do not agree with all dogs. Pink Bismuth is a safe remedy for stomach upset and diarrhea in dogs. Food allergies require slowly eliminating foods and changing the diet.
3. Atopic Dermatitis: A condition caused by environmental allergens. Dogs that suffer with airborne allergies will often rub their face along the side of a sofa or along the carpet. As with food allergies, dogs will also chew their feet. With Atopic Dermatitis, it’s common for dogs to develop ear infections due to a yeast overgrowth. Pollen, trees, grass, dust and wool fabric are just a few common airborne allergens that some dogs are sensitive to. Antihistimines are often prescribed.
4. Acral Lick Dermatitis (Lick Granuloma): This raised lesion will be red, hairless and is usually found on the leg of the dog. This neurological condition is self-induced due to continuous licking. Possible causes include anxiety, boredom and stress. Treatment will include identifying the source of the problem (anxiety, etc.), restricting licking of the area and often times medication for behavioral modification.
5. Hot Spots: Medically referred to as Acute Moist Dermatitis, these round lesions generally appear in warmer weather. Along the hip, the sides of the chest and around the head area are the most common locations for hot spots. These moist and hairless inflammations are painful causing the dog to fixate on the particular spot by licking, chewing and scratching at it. Continuous licking in one area is a large factor in the development of hot spots. These lesions can quickly become very large in size. The location of the hot spot will help determine what the underlying problem could be an; anal gland problem, ear problem or a flea problem. A Veterinarian will clip the hair around the spot, clean it with a medicated solution, prescribe antibiotics and pain medicine.
Determining the source of many dog skin problems can be difficult. Skin conditions can be uncomfortable and painful, so dog owners should not give up until they know where the problem stems from.

Tropical Aquariums - Keeping Your Tank Healthy
August 26, 2008
Tropical or reef aquariums are both beautiful and a source of enjoyment and fascination to both adults and children. A well placed, and healthy aquarium filled with highly coloured fish and live plants is an attractive and therapeutic addition to any home.
For the beginner just starting their first tropical aquarium here are some points that will make it easier to set up and maintain a beautiful and healthy aquarium.
Before you Start
Before you even begin to set up your aquarium research is needed to choose the fish. A community tank contains different species chosen to live peacefully together. There are many fish to choose from, including Guppies, Hatchetfish, Lyretails, Platys, Neon Tetra and Penguin Fish. Guppies are a popular community fish that are very easy to breed. Avoid aggressive fish such as Tiger Barbs and Rosy Barbs that may appear to be peaceful when young but grow up into bullies. You should also check how large the fish will grow and avoid placing too many larger fish in a small tank. The more fish you have in the tank the more maintenance you will need to do.
Once your tank has been cycled and stocked follow the points below to keep it healthy.
1. Avoid overfeeding. Food left in the tank decays and produces toxic chemicals. Only feed as much as the fish can eat completely within about three minutes. Twice a day feeding should be plenty. If the fish do not come to the surface when you feed then they are being fed too much.
2. Never replace all of the tank water. For a lightly stocked tank replacing 25% to 50% of the water once a month should be adequate. For a more heavily stocked tank water may need to be changed once a week. Vacuum the gravel with a siphon tube at the same time and remove some of the decorations for cleaning. Never remove everything for a clean. It will destroy the beneficial bacteria that you took the time to cultivate when you cycled your tank.
3. When the water level drops replace with tap water treated to remove any chlorine and chloramine. If there is no chloramine in your water supply you can leave a covered bucket for a day pr two to allow the chlorine to evaporate.
4. Keep a small tank prepared as a quarantine tank in case any fish develops signs of disease. This will also be useful for keeping newly purchased fish away from your main tank until you can be sure that they are healthy and disease free.
5. At least once a week test the water for ammonia, nitrite and pH so that a problem is not allowed to build up. If these levels are not optimum perform a partial water change. This will usually fix the problem without the use of chemicals.
6. Lastly find a local fish hobbyist group and join in. You will learn a lot from talking to other enthusiasts and have fun.
Keeping fish is a great hobby and an endless source of fascination to you and you family. Enjoy your aquarium and with a little care your fish can enjoy happy and long lives!

Dealing With the Heat – You and Your Dog
August 21, 2008
Most people see the summer months as a time to get outside with the family and do a variety of recreational activities. Whether it’s hiking in the woods or swimming at the park, the entire family can be included, even your four legged partner, who, during the winter months tends to lead an inactive lifestyle.
As the weather begins to break and spring turns into summer, owners of hunting dogs are advised to use moderation when resuming their outdoor activities. Most veterinarians and professional dog trainers will tell you that dogs who lead a sedentary lifestyle during the off-season are in a high risk group when spring and summer time comes around.
Limit Activity and Plan Accordingly
Moderation is also the key to properly conditioning your bird dogs for summertime activities. You would never think of going out and running 5 miles the first time out. Instead, you would start slowly and over the course of months you would build up to your ultimate goal. The same principles hold true when exercising your gun dogs or family companion. Limit your initial activities and gradually increase the duration over time.
It’s also important to plan your training activities during the cooler times of day. Early morning and late afternoon are ideal times to get out and enjoy time with your dog. If you’re thinking of take your dog for a daily walk, early morning is the best time. Eight hours of the sun pounding down of the sidewalks and asphalt can really make it uncomfortable for your four-legged partner. Your dog’s pads can quickly burn when exposed to the hot blacktop.
If your dog has long or double coat, a summer hair-cut can help dissipate his body heat. Make sure when you bring your dog to the groomer he does not cut your dog’s hair too short as this will greatly increase the chance of sunburn. Just like humans, dogs can be burned by the sun so it’s important to limit your activity to times when the sun is most intense. Typically the midday (between 11 am and 3 pm) is the time when the sun is at its highest point and its rays are the most harmful to you and your dog. Like humans, dogs with lighter colored coats tend to be fairer skinned and more sensitive to the sun’s harmful rays.
Keeping Your Dog Cool
When a human body gets hot we perspire or sweat. It’s through sweat that we are able to cool our bodies. Dogs perspire through their mouths by panting. The hotter they get the more they pant. Even though dogs don’t sweat and benefit from the thermal transfer of heat through sweat to air you can help your dog overcome the effects of heat by keeping him in an area with moving air. The air blowing across their body will help keep him cool through radiation and conduction (solid to air transfer).
Recognizing Heat Related Problems
The onset of heat stroke can be quite subtle and difficult to detect. Your dog may slowly progress from heat stress to heat exhaustion and finally heat stroke. In addition to an increase in the dog’s body temperature from a normal temperature of 101.3, the signs of heat related problems are: labored or deep and hard to control breathing, excessive panting, tacky and bright red gums, fatigue sometimes leading to collapse and even unconsciousness. It is important to get your dog out of the heat as soon as possible at the first signs of heat related problems. It’s also advisable to wet your dog down with cool, tepid water or applying cool towels directly to his body to help dissipate the heat. Please note, you do not want to bath your dog in ice cold water. This will cause your dog’s blood vessels to restrict and will cause a slower recovery time. In the event of an emergency, seek medical attention for your dog immediately, even if he seems to have fully recovered.

There is No Such Thing As Golden Labrador Retriever Purebreds
August 21, 2008
Believe me or not, that’s the plain truth. According to the various Labrador Breed Associations and national kennel clubs, Labs come in just three recognized colors – and golden is not one of them.
However, if you go browsing through advertisements for dog kennels, you can’t help but notice that there are many ads that loudly proclaim that they breed golden Labrador Retrievers. And by that, they do not mean a Golden Retriever/Labrador Retriever mix (which are also known as Golden Labrador Retrievers). They actually saying a golden colored PUREBRED Labrador Retriever.
Suspected Scam
The only three recognized colors of purebred Labrador Retrievers are yellow, black and chocolate (which used to be called liver). Yellow Labrador Retrievers have there are many shades of their yellow hair. Some are so pale that they are called “white”, even though their papers will call them yellow. The darkest shade of yellow is sometimes called “gold”. But still, even the darkest golden Labrador Retriever will not compare to the luster of a Golden Retriever.
Sadly, like PT Barnum said, “there’s a sucker born every minute”. These kind of people will believe whatever they are told. If they are told that there is such a thing as a purebred golden Labrador, they will break open their wallets and buy one. Even when they can clearly see that the puppy’s color is yellow, they think the “golden” label means “premium” and they will buy the so-called “golden Labrador Retriever” at higher price, over the identical-looking “yellow Labrador Retriever”.
Golden Lab Is Not Always Better Than A Yellow Lab
If you do discover that your pricey “golden Labrador Retriever” is simply a yellow Lab, take it easy. Your dog will still be loyal and comical and loving. Keep the dog. But by all means, complain to the Better Business Bureau about how the dog was represented. It would help if you had a copy of the original ad that lead you to the kennel and a copy of the contract. You did get a contract with your “golden Labrador Retriever”, didn’t you? If not, there’s ANOTHER thing to complain about.
If you had your lab from a rescue shelter and your lab was listed as a purebred golden Labrador Retriever, the staff just made a common mistake. Don’t rip into them about it – they are doing the best they can. You could write a thank you letter about how well you are getting on with your rescue dog and just casually mention that, officially, there is no such thing as a purebred golden Labrador Retriever. Once that is done, concentrate on building up a great friendship with your new Lab of whatever color.
Closing Words
If you already have a golden labrador retriever, don’t stop caring for your lab even now you know that he (or she) is not a purebred. Telling about this fact you have just learned to people around you that is considering to buy a labrador retriever would be something valuable. For them and for yourself.

Useful Tips For House Training a Dog
August 20, 2008
House training a dog can be defined as a training or guidance which ensures a dog that it is too considered a house member and is liked by other home members. Start your house training a dog by making him free to wander here and there in the house. Do not tie the rope, or whatever you use in the neck of your dog all the time. A dog feels relaxed in this way and feels that it is too free like other members of house to wander here and there.
When your dogs do anything wrong, you should not scold it or punish it as the dog becomes afraid in this way and cannot be your friend and just hides itself when sees you. You should give house train the dog in the friendly environment. You should give toys to a dog at your home so that it may play with them and may feel happy. Give it a ball to play with, and you should yourself too play with your dog so that it may become your friend. Your dog must have seen all home members and should be able to recognize them.
A dog can remain healthy if it gets healthy food on time. Therefore, give it proper food for eating daily on time. Be sure that your food is healthy for a dog. There are many packed foods having necessary nutrients are available in the markets for dogs which help them to be brought up. You may buy any food from the shop and give it to your dog if it enjoys eating it. Always give food to a dog in a clean utensil and do not let your dog to throw its food in its surrounding area. In this way, you can develop habit of keeping clean surroundings in a dog during house training a dog.
If you go outside daily with your dog, your dog becomes able to recognize its own house if it goes outside the house alone, and you do not know about its absence. When it will have seen surroundings of its house, it will come automatically inside the house as soon as it recognizes its house. It is another important success factor for the successful house training a dog as your dog does not go at any unknown place but comes back in its own house.
In short, pamper a dog instead of scolding it, give it neat and clean place to take rest as a dog always like to take rest only on a neat and clean place instead of dirty place, spend some time with it daily, give it training in the kindly way about getting rid of its bad habits if it has bad habits, give healthy food to a dog, show it that you love it and can protect it from its enemies. If you will follow all these mentioned useful tips, you will become surely successful in house training a dog.

With Pain and Severe Stiffness Your Dog May Need an Orthopedic Dog Bed
August 20, 2008
Dogs can get arthritis just like us humans, the problem is that they cann’t tell us what they are feeling and we have to know and watch our dogs closely to see if they are in pain or other discomfort. Dogs can also get hip dysplasia, which is a sort of abnormal formation of the hip joint. Both of these diseases result in stiffness in the joints, pain and inflammation. Although arthritis usually is first noticed when the dog gets older, hip displasia is usually developed at a younger age. It might be a good idea to buy an orthopedic dog bed and this article will show the reasons why and what type of bed we would advise you to buy for your dog.
In this time when dogs have become part of our family we take much better care of them then people did in earlier days, When our dogs get older they need other dog food and quite often they also need an different dog bed. When our dog gets arthritis or hip displasia we will notice this first in things like that the dog is walking much slower and almost never starts to run anymore, if he can he will walk much smaller walks then he used to and even for a treat he will not leap for it as quickly as he use to and last but not least you will notice the dog will not lay as comfortably anymore as he/she used to.
Types of beds
There are many different dog beds available and they come, just like dogs, in may different shapes and sizes. The orthopedic dog beds are usually made from very high quality materials like memory foam, and some even have electric heater systems to provide your dog with a soothing warmth. This can help against joint pains that they get with arthritis.
These kind of beds are available in different shapes like:
Cuddler dog beds (also called nest) This is an excellent bed for dogs who like to curl up and in colder climates the walls of the bed prevent draft and some of these beds have little legs to prevent this even more.
Pillow or mattress dog beds are the most common dog beds available but there is a big difference in quality. The form we would advise are rectangular in shape, take a size slightly bigger then the diagonal of the dog when he is laying down. The material needs to be of very high quality like memory foam or a mix of different material, the underground should be firm and shock absorbing like cedar and the top should be made from a quite thick layer of orthopedic or memory foam. The orthopedic dog bed should be made of material that has a long lasting crush resistance.
If your dog gets cold quickly you can put an electrical blanket especially designed for dogs on the dog mattress
There are many places where you can buy an orthopedic dog bed these days, the best place to look for is online, these web shops usually have all sizes of the bed of your choice. Buying the right size is important because there is much difference if you own a Spaniel or a German Sheppard.
